Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are both natural compounds present in the cannabis plant. In fact, they are two of over 100 identified cannabinoids. However, what makes THC and CBD so remarkable is that are amongst the most abundant compounds in cannabis. But how each reacts within the body is unique. THC is associated with psychoactive qualities (aka what makes you feel “high”) while CBD is not. But that’s just part of the story. There are in fact a number of qualities that differentiate these two important cannabinoids. Here’s what you need to know about THC in comparison to CBD.
THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM AND CANNABIS
In order to understand why CBD or THC produce a wide range of effects, it’s important to know what the endocannabinoid system or ECS is. The ECS is a biological system present in all vertebrate species. It is made up of a series of receptors, referred to as CB1 and CB2, and the compounds that bind to those receptors like cannabinoids (ex: THC and CBD) and endocannabinoids (cannabinoids our bodies product naturally). The ECS was first discovered by Dr. Ralph Mechoulam in the mid-1990s. The research was groundbreaking because it revealed how cannabis interacts with our bodies.
WHAT IS THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is perhaps the most notorious cannabinoid. It is the compound that has made the cannabis plant both praised and criminalized, primarily for its psychoactive qualities. That is only one aspect though of this incredibly diverse compound, though. Research indicates THC may also promote sleep, increase appetite, and decrease pain to name a few. So how does THC produce these effects? Truth be told, scientists are still trying to answer this question fully. However, the research we do have indicates THC directly acts on the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Interestingly, it does so very similarly to endocannabinoids, cannabinoids our produces internally. This interaction between THC and cannabinoid receptors help explain the mind-altering effects of Tetrahydrocannabinol along with its many other qualities.
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, was once a relatively unknown compound in cannabis. But CBD has recently gained attention for its extensive medicinal implications. While CBD does not induce psychoactive effects, it is associated with a number of potentially groundbreaking therapeutic applications. A growing body of research suggests CBD offers many life-enhancing benefits. In fact, research suggests Cannabidiol may be helpful in treating various conditions such as:
What explains these effects? Research shows that it has to do with the interaction between CBD and the ECS. CBD, unlike THC, does not directly stimulate cannabinoid receptors. Instead, it acts indirectly by influencing the signaling between CB1 and CB2 receptors.
But here’s where things get really interesting:
Research also shows that when Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabidiol are consumed, CBD counteracts the psychoactive qualities of THC. Yet, that is just the beginning. CBD also displays potent antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-cancer properties. The sheer depth of CBD’s therapeutic potential alone is mind boggling. While we have to reiterate this cannot be taken as absolute fact, it is clear to see the possible positive impact.
3 WAYS TO CONSUME CBD
